VIEWPOINT

Charles Hodge was for decades a fascinating Texas preacher.  He liked to wear boots to church, but he always gave Scriptural, thought-provoking lessons.  His writing was a style of its own, so you will enjoy this article.  It's titled "Faith Is Only for Now."

“Be thou faithful UNTIL, death (not in, into, unto) . . . “UNTIL.” All agree that salvation is by grace through faith. Few grasp what faith is. To illustrate: (1) Many falsely teach salvation by “faith only.” They cannot grasp a gift has to be received, responded to. They then foolishly conclude, “Once saved, always saved.” Saving faith has now been limited to a split-second years ago (not a life). James says faith without works is dead. This means, to them, when faith is dead then faith saves! Won’t work! (2) At ACC we “preacher boys” used to philosophize about a faithful member of 50 years sinning one sin then getting killed by a Mack truck instantly. Saved or lost? Brethren also falsely pray, “Take us at a time when we are best prepared to meet you in judgment.” Sounds good won’t work! The faith is still focused upon us – where we are, what we are doing. This is trying to “die right.” God tells us to “live right.” Faithfulness is “full of faith,” perseverance. It is not perfection. God did not tell us to be successful; He does expect us to be faithful.

The lesson? Faith is always “now,” “today,” “this minute.” A “moment” years ago is no substitute for faith “now.” “In the future I am going to come back to the church and be faithful.” That doesn’t work, “now!” Brethren have always been “wuzzers” and “gonna bees.” We must be “issers”! I am not perfect but I am faithful “right now.”

You see we live “one day at a time.” I am accountable for each day. Jesus said we could only handle “one day at a time” (Mt. 6:33,34). Be faithful TODAY . . . not just yesterday/tomorrow. Live each day faithfully. “Preach the gospel to yourself every day.” Remind yourself who you are and whom you have! Renew your commitment every day. Mates need to do this. Families need to do this. Friends need to do this. I can never live ONE perfect day . . . I can be faithful EVERY day! When you are faithful every day it will not matter what day God comes!

Who is in control of your life today, right now, this very minute?

“Be faithful until death.”

Attitude

One ship drives east, and another west
with the self-same winds that blow;
'Tis the set of the sail
and not the gales that decides the way to go.

Your "attitude" is your state of mind, your disposition, the way you look at things and the way you deport yourself. Other words often used as synonyms are: "mood, outlook, perspective, viewpoint, feeling or tone."

How important is attitude? Let me begin by sharing some quotes:

·        "Attitude is a little thing that makes all the difference"-Winston Churchill

·        "The greatest discovery of my generation is that a human being can alter his life by altering his attitudes"-William James

·        "You cannot control what happens to you, but you can control your attitude toward what happens to you, and in that, you will be mastering change rather than allowing it to master you"- Brian Tracy

·        "Having a positive mental attitude is asking how something can be done rather than saying it can't be done" - Bo Bennett

·        "Could we change our attitude, we should not only see life differently, but life itself would come to be different" - Katherine Mansfield

·        "A happy person is not a person in a certain set of circumstances, but rather a person with a certain set of attitudes" - Hugh Downs

We certainly are not surprised to see attitude stressed in God's book!

Consider these passages:

"For as he thinks in his heart, so is he"- Proverbs 23:7

"Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life" - Proverbs 4:23

"But you have not so learned Christ, if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught by Him, as the truth is in Jesus...be renewed in the spirit of your mind, that you put on the new           man which was created according to God, in truth and holiness"- Ephesians 4:20ff

"Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus"- Philippians 2:5

"Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy - meditate on these things" Philippians 4:8

On more than one occasion I heard my mother say, "Watch your attitude!" Regardless of age or circumstance, we all need to watch our attitude! The Master said, "A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things" (Matthew 12:35).

Attitude can be one of our most valuable assets. Our attitude toward God should be one of reverence, submission, love, trust, worship and prayerfulness. Our attitude toward others should be one of love, respect, consideration, forgiveness, kindness and unselfishness. Our attitude toward self should be sober, realistic, fair, humble, patient and responsible.

Have a positive attitude! Positive attitudes are contagious. "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me" (Philippians 4: 13). "What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?" (Romans 8:31).  Guess what? It all starts in our heart!

NOTES from YOUTH EXPOSURE:

Dear Cedar Grove Family,

Words cannot express our appreciation and gratitude for the opportunity you gave us to attend the Exposure Youth Conference.  It was such an uplifting and spiritual time that we really needed and it would not have been possible without Cedar Grove's gracious help.

We love you all and are truly thankful to be a part of the Cedar Grove church family.

Susan May

Thank you got helping us attend Exposure!  I had so much fun, made new friends and learned about Jesus!  The classes and sermons touched my heart and some brought me to tears!  The singing was amazing and I would totally go back next year!  Thank you so much.  I love you!

Love, Cassidy

Thank you for the opportunity to recharge my spiritual batteries at Exposure.  It was a wonderful event and I truly appreciated it.  I hope we can attend with more youth next year!

    Much love,  Janine Esler

Thank you for letting us go to EYC.  I had a lot of fun, the singing was awesome, and the lessons were even better.  But best of all I grew as a Christian and I hope we can go again next year.

With much love, Regan
