VIEWPOINT

Jim Bill McInteer, the premier preacher and publisher, one time wrote an article that asked, "Have you come to watch or worship?"

"As the old saying goes. . . 'sitting in a church house no more makes you a Christian than sitting in a hen house makes you a hen.' It is a fact incontestable that everybody who comes to church does not come for the same purpose. One man has called going to church the 'greatest spectator sport in America.' The pulpit is even sometimes referred to as 'the stage.' It seems timely, then, to ask the question “Why do you go?” The multiple purposes that drive men is not strange to the 20th century; it occurred even in the lifetime of the Lord. One time when He went into the synagogue with other worshippers they had a diverse reaction. 'For they wanted to find something which they could use as a charge against Him' (Mark 3:2). They came not to worship but to watch!

"Super critics can always find in the assembly of the people of God something of which they may make a capital case, and something they can use to justify their own littleness of spirit and being. There aren't very many perfect song leaders; flawless preachers haven't been born; prayer leaders sometimes stumble over words; announcements have a way of growing longer and longer. It is easy to find something to criticize – for man has so many imperfections it is impossible for him to hide them all.

"However, if a person comes to worship, he more than likely will obtain the very thing that brought him there namely knowing he has been in the presence of God. Jesus made a promise that where two or three are gathered together in His name, He would be there. If a person has come to worship the Lord, more than likely in His sacred quest he shall find satisfaction. Analyze your own life. Ask yourself the question, 'Have I come to worship, or watch?'

You can be successful in both – but only one carries the benefit of blessing."

Wag the Dog

"Wag the Dog” was a 1998 film written by Larry Beinhart and directed by Barry Levinson. The movie plot was of a president who was up for re-election, but a scandal was about to be revealed that would most likely cost him the election. In order to divert attention away from the scandal, the president’s “spin doctor” (Robert De Niro) hires a film director (Dustin Hoffman) to create a fake war with Albania. The war is presented to the American public as a real event.

That was a fictional story about a fictional president producing a fictional news event in an attempt to cover up a “true” scandal.

The name of the film comes from a cliche that says, “Instead of the dog wagging the tail, the tail is wagging the dog.”

Why write about this? Why should we care about such fictional story lines? It is an illustration of how the line between truth and fiction is being blurred in our world today.

A few years back the catch phrase in the news was “spin.” News reporters and political pundits put their own “spin” on the facts for the purpose of supporting a particular agenda. The catch phrase for today is “Fake News.” Our nation is headed toward chaos because of the difficulty of distinguishing between truth and fiction.

The generation that is coming up is being raised on video games and fictional shows called “reality shows.” News reporters and commentators are discovered to be overtly spinning and even altering the news to fit their own agendas. What is real? Who can you trust?

Now consider this.  The generation that is coming up is being told that Jesus Christ is a fictional character. They are being told that the events recorded in the Bible were the tales of the “spin doctors” of their day, and that it was “fake news” generated by some who wanted to make a name for themselves. The Bible, it is said, has good morals, but you can’t trust your life to a book that tells of people walking on water, casting out demons and raising the dead.

While modern media is not necessarily evil in and of itself, it is of grave importance that we do not allow such things to “wag the dog.” It is essential that Christians be reminded that God, not man, is in charge. We must remember that the Bible provides the morals, principles and teaching we need for this life and for the life to come. We must live according to the fact that on the Day of Judgment, the Bible is the only truth that will matter. Jesus Christ is the only Savior. The fog of fiction will be lifted and all “spin” and “fake news” will vanish, and each one will be judged according to his or her deeds (2 Corinthians 5:10). This is truth to live by.

In the movie, Wag the Dog, the film director wanted to go public and take credit for the president’s re-election. The president’s “spin doctor,” in order to protect the lie they had created, had the film director killed. Such is the case when we allow the tail to wag the dog.

“The coming of the lawless one is according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders, and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved” (2 Thessalonians 2:9, 10).
