THE HEIGHTENER

"Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall exalt you."  -James 4:10

Number 41

Here are some thoughts from Cecil May at Faulkner University:

A preacher said of his congregation, “These people are good, spiritually-minded people, but except for assembling on Sunday morning, and some coming back for Sunday night and Wednesday night, this church just isn’t doing anything.”

Have any of them put away lying to become truthful with one another?

Are they diligent at their jobs, as though they were working for God and not man?

Are they compassionate toward the needy and forgiving to those who mistreat them?

Are they faithful to their spouses in spite of alluring opportunities to be otherwise?

The Bible says much more about this kind of faithful walk than about the time spent in assembly or about participation in organized congregational programs (see Romans 12-15; Ephesians 4-6; Colossians 3-4).

It is unbiblical to contrast the time spent in assembly and Bible Study with the total hours of the week to show how little is spent in serving God.  Most of us could benefit from more time in public worship and Bible study, but activities like the ones outlined above are “church work” also.

That kind of daily conduct is how we become the salt and light Jesus says we are to be.

The article on “The Chris-tian’s Week” is from my friends in Greeneville, Jennings and Bette Thomley.  I hope you en-joy it, too.  I look forward to seeing you Sunday!              RA

Days of the Week for a Christian

MONDAY – WASH DAY.  Lord, help me wash away all my selfishness and vanity so I may serve you with perfect humility through the week ahead.

TUESDAY – IRONING DAY.   Dear Lord, help me iron out all the wrinkles of prejudice I have collected through the years so that I may see the beauty in others.

WEDNESDAY – MENDING DAY.   God, help me mend my ways so I will not set a bad example for others.

THURSDAY – CLEANING DAY.   Lord, help me to dust out all the many faults I have been hiding in the secret corners of my heart.

FRIDAY – SHOPPING DAY.   O God, give me the grace to shop wisely so I may purchase eternal happiness for myself and all others in need of love.

SATURDAY – COOKING DAY.   Help me, my Lord, to brew a big kettle of brotherly love and serve it with the clean, sweet bread of human kindness.

SUNDAY – THE LORD’S DAY.  Oh, God, I have prepared my house for you.  Please come into my heart so I may spend the day and the rest of my life in your presence.

Winners for October 7 were:

Everyone is invited to attend our Fall Festival on Friday, October 26 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the church building.  You may wear your costumes.  We need each family to donate one bag of candy to be brought to church by October 24.  There will be a sign up list for food posted on the bulletin board soon.

Our church Christmas Dinner will be on Saturday, December 8.  We hope you will be making your plans to attend.

Evelyn Bohannon has recently moved to a Personal Care facility.  Her daughter, Susan Bowers, suggests that if you would like to send her cards it might be best to send them to her and she will take them to Evelyn.  Susan’s address is available in the church office.

The Macland Road church invites you to their Ladies Day on November 3.  Betty Bender from Columbia , Tennessee will be speaking on ”The Influence of a Godly Woman.”  More information is on the bulletin board.

Remember that the Magi Boxes need to be returned to church no later than October 21.

Continue to remember Evelyn Bohannon, Susan Carson, Nell Peters, J. W. Raines, Richard & Joyce Smith, and Geneva White.
