THE HEIGHTENER

"Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall exalt you."  -James 4:10

In 1962, Victor and Mildred Goertzel published a revealing study of 413 famous and exceptionally gifted people.  The study was called Cradles of Eminence.  These two researchers spent years trying to understand the source of these people’s greatness, the common thread which ran through all of these outstanding people’s lives.

The most outstanding fact was that almost all of them, 392 to be exact, had to overcome very difficult obstacles in order to become who they were.  Their prob-lems became opportunities instead of obstacles.” (from Holy Sweat by Tim Hansel).,

Here are a few more comments on life and achievement:

“There is a loftier ambition than merely to stand high in the world. It is to stoop down and lift mankind a little higher” (Henry Van Dyke).

“You have not lived today until you have done something for someone who can never repay you” (John Bunyan).

“I don't know what your destiny will be, but one thing I know:  the only ones among you who will be really happy are those who have sought and found how to serve” (Albert Schweitzer).

“Treat a man as he appears to be and you make him worse. But treat a man as if he already were what he potentially could be, and you make him what he should be” (Goethe).

I look forward to seeing you Sunday with a Bible, a smile and a positive word!                  RA

Fear of the Lord

Fear of the LORD leads to life,

bringing security and protection from harm   (Proverbs 19:23).

What is this “fear of the Lord” that brings such a wonderful promise of security?  When you fear something, on some level, it’s always in your thoughts.  People who have phobias structure their whole lives around what they fear (consciously or unconsciously).  Perhaps this is part of what “fear of the Lord” means.  It’s not so much an emotion as it’s a healthy reverence for the most powerful being that exists, and a structuring of one’s life around what would please this God.  It’s not God we want to avoid, but anything that would displease him or dishonor his holiness.

Congratulations to all the winners in our Bible School Emphasis during October.  They are:

Dear Cedar Grove Family,

I want to thank you for your prayers, concern for me during my trip to the hospital.  I appreciate the phone calls and cards you mailed to me.  Thank you for the plates of food that were brought to us Sunday after the meal. The food was just what I needed.  Each of you is very dear and special to us.

Thanks to each of you who are my Christian family.

Bessie Moore

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Thank you for all the cards, calls, food and especially the prayers on Lynda’s behalf and mine during my recent surgery.  All went well!  I’m recovering excellently!  If I may be of service to any of you in any way, please don’t hesitate to call on me.

Rest assured, as we live, you all are in my daily prayers.

Tom and Lynda Hopkins

Sunday, November 18 is the Thanksgiving Appeal day for Georgia AGAPE this year.  AGAPE has set a goal to raise over $340,000 this year.  As you consider participating, think of the children AGAPE serves who depend on our support.

In order to help some families at the holiday time we want to have a canned food drive over the next few days.  Please bring whatever food items you wish to the church building.  Remember, our children like to be involved so they can bring their contributions to Bible class

Our Holiday Party this year will be Saturday, December 8.  We will be doing something different this year and there is a list on the Involvement Team bulletin board to indicate if you will be attending.  We will have further details soon.

It is time to update our e-mail and cell phone lists.  Please make any changes to your information on the list.  If you would like to be added to either list, please add your name and information.

Sheila Hunt will probably be having heart surgery soon.

Kay Buckner, Chris Greenwald and Linda Moore were sick Sunday.

Continue to remember Evelyn Bohannon, Susan Carson, Nell Peters, J. W. Raines, Richard & Joyce Smith, and

Geneva White.
